There has been escalating verbal tension between Israel and Turkey following President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s suggestion that Turkey could potentially intervene militarily in Israel’s conflict with Gaza. The exchange between Turkish and Israeli officials, marked by inflammatory remarks, occurred on Sunday and Monday. Erdogan’s statement, in which he referenced Turkey’s past military interventions in other countries, prompted Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz to compare Erdogan’s actions to those of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. In response, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs likened Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Adolf Hitler.
The heated rhetoric comes amid concerns of a broader escalation. Erdogan, known for his strong words during conflicts involving Israel, emphasized Turkey’s ability to act similarly to its interventions in Karabakh and Libya. Turkey has previously supported the Libyan government and provided assistance to Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Within this context, the Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, stated that Erdogan represents the voice of humanity’s conscience, implying that international Zionist circles, including Israel, are disturbed by this stance. The exchange has also seen economic repercussions, with Turkey imposing export restrictions on Israel and subsequently halting trade, prompting Israel to consider scrapping the free trade agreement with Turkey.
The situation remains tense, with both Turkey and Israel engaging in aggressive rhetoric while the threat of further escalation looms.
