The Foreign Relations Committee of the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) issued a statement rejecting Nechirvan Barzani’s comments regarding the stance and developments of the Kurdish movement.

The statement mentioned that after the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) decided at its 12th Congress on February 27 to end armed activities, the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party gave “negative assessments” of these developments.

The KCK spokesperson referred to the weapons burning ceremony on July 11, carried out by a group of 30 people led by Besê Hozat, co-chair of the KCK Executive Council, as a sign of commitment to the peace process.

The KCK stated in its announcement: “Nechirvan Barzani, with his unfair assessments and distortion of facts, showed a negative stance that repeats the language and mentality of opponents of the solution.”

The statement indicated that Barzani attempted to show “discord” between PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan and the movement, which the KCK described as “a major mistake and deficiency.”

The KCK stated that Barzani’s comments were published before his visit to Turkey, and also on October 9, the anniversary of the international conspiracy against Abdullah Öcalan in 1998. This date is also the anniversary of the occupation of Serêkanî and “Girê Spî.”

Finally, the KCK called on Nechirvan Barzani to “abandon these negative stances.”

Full text of the KCK statement:

“In response to Leader Apo’s historic call for peace and democratic society on February 27, the PKK held its 12th Congress and announced its decision to the world public. The PKK, following Leader Apo’s call at its 12th Congress, decided to end all activities under the PKK name and simultaneously abandoned the strategy of armed struggle. It also demonstrated its commitment to the process by burning weapons, when a group of 30 people, led by comrade Besê Hozat, co-chair of the KCK Executive Council, burned their weapons on July 11, 2025.

At a time when important events are occurring in our region and country, it is clear how important and vital Leader Apo’s project of peace and democratic society is. All those who support peace, democracy, and freedom have evaluated this with great sensitivity. In response to these developments, Nechirvan Barzani gave negative comments and assessments about our movement’s stance and developments at a meeting in Erbil, and rejected these developments. These comments are completely unacceptable. Nechirvan Barzani, with his unfair assessments and distortion of facts, showed a negative stance that repeats the language and mentality of opponents of the solution. Speaking with the arguments of the Turkish state does not serve the Kurdish people and democratic forces. It is a major mistake and deficiency that Nechirvan Barzani takes on such a role as to suggest there is ‘discord’ between Leader Apo and our movement, and tries to create an understanding that the PKK does not listen to Leader Apo.

All Kurdish people, as well as all those who support peace, know very well whose language of opposition this is. Of course, Nechirvan Barzani can have relations with the Republic of Turkey, no one opposes this. However, it is a significant situation that he published these negative comments before his visit to Turkey, and also made them public on October 9, which marks the beginning of the anniversary of the international conspiracy, the anniversary of the occupation of Serêkanî and Girê Spî. We reject these comments that show this mentality and present them to all sensitive parties, and we expect Nechirvan Barzani to abandon these negative stances.”

This comes as Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, while participating in a peace meeting in Erbil regarding the peace process in Turkey and Northern Kurdistan, stated: “Turkey is very serious about this process. Whether the process is slow or fast, there is a serious decision in Turkey to bring this process to completion. President Öcalan’s messages are very clear, Qandil also knows well what it must do, but it doesn’t do it! This creates disappointment, even for President Öcalan himself, which is not right. In appearance and in words they say, we follow President Öcalan’s words, but when it comes to implementation and practice, they do exactly the opposite! This causes great harm to the Kurds and to the process. This is not the time for these games, these games are obvious and visible.”
